Create a Sleek and Basic Home Bar

How and What to Stock for an Impressive Home Cocktail Bar

So you have a few go-to cocktails that you really like. Maybe you went to your local cocktail bar and had your socks knocked off by their creative libations– or maybe it was just a really, really good margarita that made you realize you can totally do this at home. Congrats— you’ve been bit by the cocktail bug, and you want to start creating your own craft cocktails.

But where do you start? We’ve got the basics for you right here. So what do you need?

THE TOOLS:

You could buy your stuff piecemeal. You know you need a shaker, but what else? Here’s a list:

  • A shaker that doesn’t stick or leak.
  • A strainer to strain out the bits of fruit, ice, or herbs.
  • A jigger because the key to top-notch cocktails is exact measurements.

Of course you could also add a mixing glass, a bar spoon, a muddler, and some fancy glassware. But these are the basics. Good news? You can get them all right here, and save $10 off the set. Use code SAVE10HOMEBAR for $10 off the 4-Piece Set in Stainless, Copper or Gold.

THE BOOZE:

You could very easily spend a fortune stocking your bar. But today we’re making a few suggestions to give you a jumping off point – something you can build slowly without breaking the bank. We’d recommend starting with this list and eliminating anything you know you don’t care for. (Example: Hate gin? Skip it. You can always add it later when you have guests.)

Here’s a list of booze basics:

  • Vodka
  • Gin
  • White Rum
  • Whiskey
  • Blanco Tequila
  • Triple Sec
  • Dry Vermouth (Only if you’re a big martini drinker – otherwise this can wait.)

Why “white” spirits rather than aged? Versatility. Blanco Tequila is just more versatile than Reposado, for example. Love the aged stuff? Swap them out! It’s your bar.

THE MIXERS:

Without these key ingredients your cocktail creations will be seriously limited. Good news – you don’t need many to make a good number of cocktails!

  • Start with Angostura bitters. (They’re the most commonly used bitters and you can get away with just these.)
  • Lemons
  • Limes
  • Oranges (often just for the peel, but worth it!)
  • Sparkling water
  • Tonic
  • (Bonus points) Ginger beer

Oh, and pick up some white granulated sugar while you’re at the store – you’ll need it to make simple syrup.

With just the items above you can do some serious damage. Beyond the above, I’d say you can add as you go. Got a hankering for a paloma? Grab a grapefruit and juice away. (You get the idea.)
